Introduction
The nervous system is one of the most important and complex regulatory systems of the human body. It ensures the reception, processing, and transmission of information, coordinating the work of all organs and systems. Acting as the main control center, it allows the body to react to changes in the external environment and maintain internal stability.
The nervous system works in close connection with the endocrine system. While the nervous system provides quick responses through electrical impulses, the endocrine system regulates body functions more slowly but for a longer time using hormones. Together, they create a unified mechanism of regulation and adaptation, which helps the organism function effectively under different conditions.
The main functions of the nervous system include control of body movements, perception of sensory information, regulation of behavior, and maintenance of homeostasis. It also plays a key role in higher mental processes such as thinking, memory, emotions, and learning.
The purpose of this abstract is to study the structure, functions, and mechanisms of action of the nervous system, to describe its main parts, and to review common disorders that affect its normal functioning.
1. General Characteristics of the Nervous System
1.1. Definition and Functions
The nervous system is a complex network of organs, tissues, and cells that regulates and coordinates all functions of the human body. It serves as the main control system that allows the organism to receive information from the environment, process it, and respond to various internal and external changes.
The activity of the nervous system is based on the transmission of electrical impulses and chemical signals, which ensures fast and accurate communication between different parts of the body. Thanks to this system, all organs work in harmony, maintaining the body’s balance and adaptation to new conditions.
The main functions of the nervous system include sensory input, which means the perception of stimuli through receptors; integration, or the analysis of the information received; and motor output, which provides an appropriate response in the form of muscle contraction or glandular secretion. In addition, the nervous system is responsible for maintaining homeostasis and for higher mental processes, such as memory, emotions, reasoning, and decision-making.
In general, the nervous system ensures the coordination of all vital functions, connects the organism with its environment, and forms the physiological basis of human behavior and mental activity.
1.2. Structural and Functional Division
The nervous system is divided into two main parts: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Together they ensure communication, control, and coordination of all body functions.
The central nervous system includes the brain and the spinal cord. It receives and processes information, makes decisions, and sends commands to organs and muscles. The brain controls thinking, memory, and voluntary movements, while the spinal cord connects the brain with the body and is responsible for reflexes.
The peripheral nervous system consists of the cranial and spinal nerves that link the CNS with the rest of the body. It carries sensory signals to the brain and transmits motor impulses back to the muscles.
