Introduction
Francis Scott Fitzgerald - American writer who entered literature as a singer of the "jazz age"; the largest representative of the so-called "lost generation" in literature. His work was an important milestone in the development of American realism in the first half of the twentieth century.
The best works of the writer - "The Great Gatsby", "Tender Night", and "The Last Tycoon" - put Fitzgerald on a par with the outstanding masters of American prose ".
In his works "Fitzgerald reflected the conflicts characteristic of American reality: the tragic fate of an outstanding personality in the capitalist world, the pernicious impact of big money on the human soul, the general degradation of American civilization, the search for ethical values that oppose the norms of bourgeois morality."
The Great Gatsby is set on Long Island. The protagonist, Jay Gatsby, is a nouveau riche whose wealth is legendary. He achieved his well-being for only one purpose - for the sake of the location of the beautiful Daisy Fey. In his youth, Gatsby was unable to marry her because of the difference in social status, and while he serves in the war and earns on the illegal sale of alcohol during Prohibition, Daisy manages to marry Tom Buchanan, who comes from a wealthy family. The story is narrated from the perspective of Nick Carraway, who is directly related to the rest of the characters in the novel. Nick gradually learns about the love story of Gatsby for Daisy, is an eyewitness to their relationship in the present and becomes a witness to the collapse of hopes and the tragedy of the protagonist.
The novel received positive reviews in the periodicals, but diverged, to the chagrin of the writer, badly. Moreover, the critics who praised the novel did not immediately give it the assessment it deserved, backed up by solid analysis. Only a few critics and writers of that time appreciated the novel, which, in an unusually stingy manner of narration, tells about the tragedy of a "dream" that was misinterpreted.
“Today American literary scholars emphasize precisely the social significance of the novel, its social and social sound, and the realistic context of American life. Some argue, "The Great Gatsby" is "not just a chronicle of the 'jazz age', but a dramatic depiction of the desecration that the naive" American Dream "is subjected to in a corrupt society."
1. Stylistic analysis of the work "The Great Gatsby"
For the stylistic analysis, we have selected an excerpt from the fifth chapter of the novel by Francis Scott Fitzgerald "The Great Gatsby". The choice of the text for analysis was because in the structure of the novel as a whole, the fifth chapter has a special meaningful meaning. This chapter tells about the meeting of Gatsby and Daisy, which in fact is the direct plot of the plot, the development of the action.
The main characters, who in the past were madly in love with each other, but whose paths diverged due to life circumstances, meet again after almost five years. They are both confused and happy. Gatsby shows Daisy his mansion, which he plans to be a family nest for the two of them. In the described passage, the hero leads Daisy and Nick to his room, and demonstrates a rich wardrobe; it is then that the first significant emotional outburst occurs. From the beginning of the meeting, the emotional situation becomes more and more heated and instantly discharged when Daisy suddenly begins to cry, according to her, from the fact that she has never seen such beautiful shirts in her life.
It is possible to inspect only the house, as the rain begins again, which upsets the plans of the protagonist. The change in the weather brings some lyricism to the mood of the characters and partly even tragedy. They look out of the window of the house at the strait, on the opposite side of the bay, where in clear weather you can see a green light burning on the pier near the house of Daisy and her husband; a light that was of colossal importance for Gatsby, a symbol of the dream that he cherished all the long five years of separation from his beloved girl.
Based on the results of a preliminary analysis of the selected passage, we compiled a comparative table of the stylistic means used in it, arranging them according to their frequency of use in the text.
