Unit 1 James Hilton “Passionate year”
James Hilton (1900-1954) was born in England and educated at Cambridge where he wrote his first novel, “Catherine Herself”. His first big success came with the publication of “Good-bye” and “Mr.Chips”. It was dramatized and filmed. “Lost Horizon” published in 1933 was awarded the Hawthornden Prize. Some of his other books are: “We Are Not Alone” (1937), “Random Harvest” (1941), “Nothing So Strange” (1947), “Time and Time Again” (1953). A resident of the United States since 1935, he died in Long Beach, California.
The theme of this work is the first steps of a young teacher at school and that life can be quite cruel to him, because this was the tradition of the school. The main idea of the “Holy Year” is that the teacher, no matter what happens, must have such qualities as calmness, attentiveness and tolerance. At the beginning of the work, the author described the condition of a young teacher at a boys' school. At the very beginning, the tension of an inexperienced teacher is felt, this is stated here: “Speed was very nervous as he took his seat on the dais at five to seven and watched the school straggling to their places.” Mr. Hilton thus conveyed the state of the atmosphere of anxiety in the classroom. This was done to show the teacher's panic in such confusion. The author uses such theatrical phrases to describe this atmosphere as: “subdued expectation”, epithets “an atmosphere of subdued expectation”, “nervous”, “keenly conscious” and stylistic devices: “as if he were sitting on a powder-magazine”. The writer shows the children’s hostility towards the teacher through expressive synonyms: “stared”, instead of “looked” and “coming”.
The beginning of the conflict starts with “At about a quarter past seven” and ends with “you have a hundred lines.” When a young teacher named Speed met the class, the atmosphere was turbulent. This is described by the synonym "tittering" to describe this stressful situation. This text also contains military terms: “armory”, “weapon”, “recoil”. It can be concluded that the main character calmed down and took everything into his own hands, even though the atmosphere was tense to the limit. The author, to reinforce the protagonist’s confidence, used a rhetorical exclamation sentence: “Wawsley or Wurssley – however you call yourself – you have a hundred lines!”
The end of the text begins with the words “The whole assembly roared with laughter” and ends with “they went away laughing.” At the climax, everything calmed down and calmed down.
The tone of this work can be described by words such as irony and humor. The problem raised in this text is relevant because every teacher at the beginning of his career was faced with a lack of experience in how to behave with students. The epithet “Passionate” in the title of the work describes the school atmosphere, where fights and turmoil and conflicts constantly occur both between students and between teacher and student.
